Remote workers are closer than ever!

There’s a lot of talk in the media right now about bringing people back to the office, so we wanted to find out whether it’s needed from the people who would actually be affected: remote workers! We surveyed 251 people about their remote working circumstances, with a big focus on their connection to their co-workers, and here’s what we found out…

Most people work from home, and they’re happy about it!

91% of people work remotely, at least some of the time.

Virtual communication doesn’t seem to be a problem…

91% of people feel comfortable sharing opinions and feedback in virtual meetings.

66% of people said they chat to colleagues about non-work topics daily or multiple times a day. 21% chat to co-workers at least once a week. 3% have informal chats monthly, 5% rarely, and 5% never have them at all.

…in fact, people feel even closer now that they work apart.

63% of people speak to their colleagues informally more often now that they work from home. 19% said it’s around the same and only 16% said they connect less.

A huge number of people (78%) agree that working from home has positively impacted their relationships with colleagues. Only 3% believe it’s had a negative impact.

There’s still an emphasis on maintaining a good culture.

An incredible 96% of people who work remotely said company culture is important.

61% believe that weekly in-person meetups are required to maintain a good culture. 26% think monthly is enough, 6% said quarterly, 3% said twice a year, and 1% said annually. 3% of people don’t think in-person meetups are required at all.

When it comes to maintaining a good culture remotely, 76% of companies have implemented regular in-person meetups. 57% opt for virtual social events. 51% use online communication channels, 34% have team building activities, 26% have implemented a recognition program, 21% use a buddy program, and 18% have invested in wellness activities.

Overall, most people (84%) feel that their company culture is stronger in a remote setting.

Our analysis…

People are closer than ever now that they’re working apart. There’s a little irony in that, isn’t there!

And perhaps some logic, too. After all, there’s more of an emphasis now on building and maintaining connections with co-workers. Just because you sit next to someone doesn’t mean you automatically bond with them.
